Today started early with a home-cooked breakfast of fresh eggs, old cheese, and questionable yogurt (I don't think we translated that label quite accurately...). Today started early because our plan was to hit the Van Gogh and Rijks museums all before noon. Today was also our first encounter with stout Netherlands rain. But that will come later, the morning was thankfully just rain as we made sure to arrive at least 30 minutes early, just-in-case...
We started with reservations for the Van Gogh museum at 9:00 am. There was just so much to see! I liked seeing the early influences for Van Gogh. My favorite of these was the "Grape Harvest" by Jules Bastien-Lepage. Jeremy likes "The Potato Eaters" by the master himself.
The Rijks museum was stuffed full with all kinds of artwork and artifacts. Even the building it is housed in is an amazing masterpiece (see below). We ran up and down the levels as fast as we could to try to see everything we wanted to before our noon lunch reservations.
We ate lunch at a nearby restaurant called the "Seafood Bar" and, despite the rain, decided to walk the 30 minutes back across town rather than taking the tram. Funny enough, it was only misting when we made this decision and started bundling up. By the time we started putting one foot in front of the other, the weather had turned to a dreary rain. It really didn't change our decision, however, the streets did not really become less enjoyable (we both had some stout layering going on). The rain eased up a little and we had some great views of the city along our walk.
We also managed to squeeze in some coffee and tea, a killer sunset, and some more brown cafes before dinner.
