Greetings from Amsterdam!! Day 1: December 1st, 2016.
We arrived around 8:30 am and wasted no time getting to our rented apartment, getting settled, and hitting the streets. We resisted the temptation of sleep--of which both of us got none on the flight over--so that we could get on this time zone as fast as possible.
In our first walk around our immediate surroundings in the Jordaan district we explored cafes and tried the local fare, hit some of the bars Jer had on his bucket list, and ate a wonderful French dinner. One thing there are plenty of are specialty cheese shops. The Netherlands is the birthplace of the amazing Gouda cheese and so you will find cheese shops stacked to the brim with the bright yellow wheels all over Amsterdam. We ducked in to one to pick up some provisions for our quaint, European appartment and stood in line next to the most fluffly Newfoundland puppy.
The Dutch love their animals and it shows with the number of shop cats and dog patrons that can be found in almost every type of commercial setting: restaurants, bars, and non-edible goods shops. We still have not visited the Poezenboot yet (a house boat that serves as a cat sanctuary), but we have already seen a couple shop cats.
We stayed out exploring until a respectable hour (we snuck in an afternoon nap) before returning to our appartment for the night. The weather all day was cloudy and cold when the wind blew, with the occassional misting of rain; perfect sweater weather! Tomorrow should be perfect weather for visiting the museums.
We do have some photos to share, but the blogger program is having some trouble with them at the moment. We will add them just as soon as we figure out the problem...
Tot ziens!! (See you later!!)
