We had to rest up after all the travel at break-neck speed, but now we are looking forward to a couple of days packed with activities. Although we were tired, we’re both really glad we chose to stop in Verona to have a look around. The Italian city was surprisingly quaint with its own Roman coliseum. The town square was spectacular with older frescoes still vivid on the northern facades, its own sculpture fountain, and very lively with everyday activity. It was a bit cold in northern Italy as we walked around so we had tea in the town square facing the square market to watch the everyday town’s folk get their fruits and vegetables for the day. We got back to the train station in time to finally reach our first multi-night destination: Venezia (Venice).
As expected, Venice took Jeremy’s breath away and it was love-at-first-sight. The tiny alleyways, beautiful canals, and unique daily life of Venetians are exactly what Jeremy is interested in and it is made all the better with the amazing seafood that we are enjoying. The appartment we are renting loos over a canal and is a perfect vantage point to watch the shipping warehouse load up their packages onto their delivery boat and head out for the day. We’ve seen a lot these past 30 hours: plenty of canals, the old Jewish ghetto that is still functioning as the Jewish neighborhood but that also has a memorial to the more than 25,000 Jews that were deported during the holocaust, Piazza San Marco and the basilica, Campo Santa Margherita, we took a vaporetto, and even explored the Cannaregio area where we are staying a little bit.
Tomorrow we are planning to see the Rialto market in the morning, the island of Burano, and the start to the Carnivale festivities here in the Cannaregio. It will be a big day, so buona notte for now!
